Blast from the Fan Art Past

April 25th, 2010

I’m sure many of you have seen this epic piece of fan art before, but I thought it should be featured again. Created by Douglas Harvey (a.k.a Lysol Jones), it has been floating around the internet since the original pilot came out, and in my eyes considered one of the first and unique Adventure Time fan art pieces. It inspired me to create my own tribute and to pursue the Autumn Society tributes you’ve seen here on Frederator. Check out more of Douglas’ work here lysol-Jones.deviantart.com and here brograbs.dapshow.com.

Animatic clips from each of the first season’s episodes are now collected together on Flickr. You can also view them by scrolling through the blog by clicking here. You’ll see a couple bonuses, too, like a few for the main titles.

We’ve already got several for season #2. I’ll start posting them in a few weeks.

“The Enchiridion” Storyboards

April 22nd, 2010

“The Enchiridion” Storyboard V1.0

So here are a pair of storyboards from the first Adventure Time episode to go into production.

After Nickelodeon passed on the show - twice - Cartoon Network said it would gladly take on the series. That is, provided Pen could prove the seven-minute short made for Nick wasn’t a one-hit wonder. Especially as the length would move from seven to eleven minutes, Pen needed to deliver something more substantive (if that’s the word I want). In other words, CN wanted the essence of the short, but expanded for a series. This was in the summer of 2008. The network suggested Pen deliver a script or two, but we recommended he storyboard out an episode. After all, working from an outline to storyboard, not from a script, was the way Pen would want the show to go. A board would give a better sense of what was on Pen’s [Read more…]

“…and the Ice King! On drums!”

April 22nd, 2010

It’s impossible to tell, but that’s the Ice King (to the right of the red arrow) on drums with Andrew W.K. and his band (Jake just wanted to dance along). Carrie and I saw them all (and Pen, Genndy Tartakovsky, and JG Quintel) at Jazz at Lincoln Center (?) in New York yesterday where Cartoon Network unveiled its 2010-11 programming schedule for advertisers, and broke the news that Adventure Time is the hit of their season (and it’s in-production second season too).

Maybe we can get them a club gig too.

April 21st, 2010

You always have to be ready for surprises on the Candy Kingdom Subway! This super awesome Illustration and tribute is brought to you by Oliver Akuin. I’ve known Oliver since my intern days on Class of 3000. Oliver taught me a lot of the process of being in an animation production. Its been awesome to be working with him again on Adventure Time. Oliver works on the animatics and storyboard conforming for the show. More of Oliver’s art here and more Adventure Time Autumn Society tributes here.

“The Jiggler” Score

April 20th, 2010

Casey James Basichis
Casey James Basichis

Okay, so it’s not the stand-alone Auto-Tune song from last night’s “The Jiggler,” but it’s about 72 times better. Adventure Time composer Casey James Basichis was kind enough to make the episode’s full score available to me and you.

I totally agree with Lucinda Michelle when she Tweeted, “I mean seriously, @AdventureTimeCN has some seriously wonderful scoring…beyond crystal castles good. beyond 8-bit good. Srsly. Wow!”

Seriously.I don’t know beans about the 8-bit or crystals castles, but I will say this. As with the short way back when, Casey’s scoring is an integral part of Adventure Time while like the cartoon as a whole, distinctive and distinguishable. We’re lucky he’s on board.

P.S. Auto-Tune? Twitter? 8-bit? Am I on Mars?

Dungeons & Meatlballs.

I’m not sure if any of you have seen any of the interviews (like here and here) where Pen talks about his influences on Adventure Time, but I found two of three particularly revealing. The Simpsons is a given (it’s been around since Pen’s childhood).

D&D is best left for someone other than me to talk about. “D&D inspires my logic for how I go about creating each episode,” Pen says to Rene Guzman at the San Antonion-Express News. “In D&D, everything’s in front of you, you can do anything you want, it’s all up to your imagination. I like the freedom of that feeling. I like the characters to be able to have the freedom to segue away from a story if they wanted to.” Finn is “quite the justice-seeking righteous paladin.”

For someone my age, his Meatballs influence makes perfect sense. (And I’m particularly partial to it since Bill Murray made [Read more…]

“The Enciridion!” Title Card Adventure

April 19th, 2010

First off, don’t forget to watch Cartoon Network tonight at 8:00 p.m. for the premiere of “The Enchiridion!” While it’s the seventh to air, it’s actually the first Adventure Time episode produced. And, as with any initial production, “The Enchiridion!” had its share of bumps and baggage. I’ll post a couple of versions of the storyboard tomorrow, but here’s an abridged glimpse at the process of creating the title card for episode #1 (and thereby setting the tone for those to follow).

You can probably tell by now there’s a deep, hard-boiled pulp feel to the Adventure Time title cards. For “The Enchiridion!,” the art team turned toward this copy of Science Fiction for inspiration. Here, you can also see creator Pendleton Ward’s rough concept for the card.
