Thanks guys for the wonderful pic!

Right around the time we started up Frederator and Oh Yeah! Cartoons my childhood bud from Long Island Jeff Eberhardt (we met when we were three and we were great friends past college) called and asked would I meet with his daughter? Jen had just moved to Hollywood and wanted to get started as an actress and maybe do some voice overs. I don’t think I was much help, though later on I tried to hook her up with Steve Marmel’s stand-up web community, but I remember telling Jeff I thought she had the drive to go the distance.

Fast forward nine years and I didn’t pay enough attention to Jun Falkenstein’s post about her very cool Kyle & Rosemary cast. Or I just didn’t put 2+2 together (What do you want? I’m the doofus producer. Or else I’m just too old.) Because Jeff’s daughter is Jentle Phoenix, the voice of Gothy Rosemary.

Congratulations to all of us. The world’s a small place. I love it when this kind of thing happens.

Doug Bresler: “Doogtoons Asks A Ninja!”

Channel Frederator Blog

We first came across Doug Bresler and the wonder that is Doogtoons when he submitted “Haig’s Childhood” to Channel Frederator about 7 or 8 months ago. Doug’s ability to take an interview and make it ten times more interesting through the use of animation is very impressive. “Ask a Ninja” is no exception. DThe Ninja has his own “Ask A Ninja” podcast which can be downloaded here, and Doug Bresler also has more episodes of “Nick and Haig” which can be downloaded on iTunes, or his website

Says Bresler, “The Ninja from that podcast agreed to be a guest on my show. I nearly escaped with my life! He is one deadly fellow. Check out their really funny show when you can. My favorite episode is “Ninja Santa”.

My show Doogtoons is an animated interview show. I like to put it like this… It’s just like Oprah, but a lot more intimate and a lot more cartoon. It started with “Nick and Haig” and now it’s growing to feature more guests and more craziness. Be expecting some interesting personalities from across the web scape!”

Thanks again Doug, for your continued support of Channel Frederator, and your terrific work!

Anyone know where to buy one piece suits?

John Reynolds Is In the Building!

That New Show Smell

May 31st, 2006

joshreynolds.jpg

This morning I was fortunate enough to meet John Reynolds, cartoon wunderkind, who happens to be the youngest creator Frederator has ever had (he was 12 when he created “Terry and Chris!” for Oh Yeah! Cartoons Season 3). This short was directed by Butch Hartman, who has been a very encouraging presence in John’s career as an artist.

Now a whopping 19 years old, John is going to the Art Institute of Los Angeles, Santa Monica Campus, and continues to come up with original ideas to pitch to the likes of Frederator. I thought his art on this panel of his board was particularly outstanding.

Thanks so much for stopping by, John! Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Wicked!

Sparkles and Gloom

storyboard_01.jpg

A page from our rapidly expanding storyboard, taken from the middle of Sparkles’ and Gloom’s first big fight scene. It would seem that, while good powers give you the ability to bring back disco acts, evil powers give you the ability to turn your bratty twin sister into the self-proclaimed “King of Pop?” Amazing.

I’ve also been listening to the ultra-cheesy (and ultra-AWESOME) “Wicked” soundtrack as I draw. One of our followers on Deviantart suggested that SnG could be called “The Xs” meets “Wicked.” With this on the brain, I came out with this little doodle imagining what our heroines might look like in 10 years or so. Is that a Broadway role I see in their future? Or maybe just more fight scenes…

…Back to drawing. :)

Dave Levy And Your Career In Animation

Talk to the Snail

May 31st, 2006

I had the good fortune to eat some terrifc breakfast in Manhattan with Dave Levy last week. Dave’s the head of ASIFA in NYC, he teaches at SVA, and he’s been a key player at Nick Jr for a real long time. Oh, and he’s a real good guy, too. Anyway, he told me all about his new book, Your Career in Animation: How to Survive and Thrive, being released (according to Amazon) today. Specifically wanting to avoid the more clinical approach used in a lot of other animation resource books, Dave incorporates more than 100 interviews he’s conducted over the years with tons of people in the industry, from artists to executives. It’s light, fun, and extremely informative.

If you’re interested in the business of animation at all, you really need to pick up a copy of this book. Dave knows what he’s writing about.

Bravest Warriors

May 31st, 2006

Crunch Time. I’m outa here on FRIDAY!

So I am busy tweaking the last few things I can tweak. I have been watching my animatic over and over .. wondering what .. would make it funnier. When making the animatic.. we cushioned the timing on some scenes so that when we go back in to edit the cartoon we will have some excess slack to cover .. us.(<– that hyper link is a Autostereogram!) Does that make sense? I tried to explain it because I’m excited to edit down the cushions.. to make the timing funnier.

Ahhh.. I’ve gotta get back to work.
