Greetings True Believers!

This is Raul and Bill here at Hero Heights central and we’re happy to announce that we’ve entered the post production phase of the show! Earlier in the week we got a chance to preview the color reel of Hero Heights. The overseas studio Wang Films did a crackerjack job in putting it together. The animation is snappy and fluid just the way we like it and the BGs are sensational. We couldn’t be happier. Now all we have left to do is get together with our composer to create a really smokin’ score and then we get to add some explosive sound effects. After all that we then just need to edit everything together and mix it up!

We’re hoping to figure out how to post a clip for all of you to enjoy, but until then we thought you might like to check out the newest installment of the Random Cartoons Guide to the Hero Heights Universe!

Enjoy!

Summerteeth

June 30th, 2006

bg-testios.jpg

Here’s a background test for “Summerteeth” from the brilliant Brad Gake at Renegade Animation.

During our weekly round of golf, Brad and I started talking about BG style ideas for “Summerteeth.” The idea of collage came up and was dismissed at first. A few holes later (and a good amound of missed putts), collage became the way to go.

Brad rules.

The Importance of RANDOM CARTOONS

Bronk & Bongo

June 30th, 2006

random03.jpg

I recently stumbled upon a internet poll regarding RANDOM CARTOONS. It basically asked diehard cartoon fans what they thought of the up coming season of OH YEAH! now officially titled RANDOM cartoons. And 90% of the posts were completely apathetic about it. And some were downright belligerent.

The idea that these are 39 shorts that are created by true animators who are fans of the medium is just flat out amazing. I know that I feel blessed to have this opportunity. I thank Fred for believing in me and my ideas and all of the other creators as well.

As an insider I have seen shows get produced for all the wrong reasons or worse, good ideas mangled into horrendous ones by focus groups and corporate lapdogs. In fact it’s a wonder a good cartoon can even be made today. There are so many demographics, business goals and political and content hurdles a cartoon idea has to meet, jump through and negotiate that it’s amazing anything decent ever makes it to air at all.

Back in the day it was just the animators that created and wrote cartoons to entertain general audiences, kids and adults. They didn’t have focus groups, or meetings with licensees. Things didn’t have to be able to translate into a video game and a line of clothing and assorted products. Their only concern was making a good and funny cartoon with appealing characters and designs.

They didn’t have to worry about what kind of food might be shown in a scene because they don’t want to promote unhealthy eating habits in children. They didn’t have to worry that kids wouldn’t know what a PIANO CONCERTO is, or that kids wouldn’t know classical music at all for that matter. And they sure as heck didn’t run their ideas past psychologists for their input. The only thing that mattered was if it made you laugh? It was just about making good cartoons.

I applaud Frederator for creating an experimental platform like OH YEAH! and RANDOM CARTOONS. It’s not just a “random” collection of nonsense thrown together to see what sticks. It’s a celebration of creativity and animation put back into the hands people who love that art form the most. There isn’t a single other outlet offering this kind of opportunity to anyone right now. Seven minutes to give a new original idea a chance, without having to meet the standards and criteria of the mega corporations that air cartoons, sell product or promote other lines of business? That’s pretty much unheard of.

Frederator realizes that the best ideas are usually the most pure and the best cartoons are made by their creators and not by a committee of businessmen who have never even seen a cartoon. Thanks to this train of thought we were able create Bronk and Bongo with as little interference as possible.

Maybe all the shorts won’t appeal to everyone, but at least they were all made with love and purity of vision by their creators. And that alone should be applauded, appreciated and most of all supported.

That is, unless you want more shows like WINX CLUB.

Bloggingly yours, Alan and Manny.

Happy 4th of July!

“Strictly Super Week” concludes, suitably, with “Secret Agent” (1943) — the last theatrical Superman cartoon released. Like many of the second season installments, this one has a World War II plot line (Helpful hint to aspiring Nazi spy rings — next time, you might want to tone down those Katzenjammer accents, and pick a ring leader who doesn’t look like Adolf Hitler with a monocle!) Multiple gunfights and car chases — and a nick of time rescue on a pivoting bridge.

Some odd trivia factoids: (A) Clark Kent/Superman has virtually no dialogue — two words, to be exact. (B) This is the only film in the series not to feature Lois Lane (away on assignment?) Instead Supe consorts with a heroic blond double agent. (C) That ever present patriotic subtext in all things Superman, bubbles over here with a very literal, flag waving finale!

ReFrederator returns on Monday with a new theme. Your animation vaccination, administered daily!

Channel Frederator Featured Film: “Wizard Needs Food Badly”

Channel Frederator Blog

June 29th, 2006

This music video has a catchy tune, highly stylized Flash animation, and one of the best lines in history: “You say ‘tomato’, I say ‘video game’”.

Animated by commercial production agency Ghostbot, the music video was composed by Five Iron Frenzy whose off beat lyrics and quirky sensibility really make this a video you can’t help but get sucked into.

Why does the wizard need food badly? Channel Frederator viewer Bartus enlightens us: “Wizard needs food badly is a reference to NetHack- an old, but really cool game! The guy is saying he needs his gaming fix! I love it!”

Ghostbot was formed in 2004 by Alan Lau, Roque Ballesteros, and Brad Rau. Collectively, they have collaborated with award-winning studios such as Walt Disney Television, Nickelodeon, (C)olossal Pictures, Curious Pictures, Wild Brain, Vinton Studios, Mondo Media, Madhouse, and Leap Frog.
