Drunken Blonde Twins.
This title might be a little misleading.
Watching these cartoons, however, is a bit like hanging out with a pair of drunken blonde twins.
Except without the twins, all the blondeness, and the alcohol.
I guess all you are left with is Fun. And that’s not half bad, right?

— Portland D&D, submitted by Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH
Our Portland Brethren in Animation, the Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH had their Second Annual (can I say that?) Drinking & Drawing Event the same night we held ours in NYC, Jan. 23rd,2008. I hope their hangover was a lot better than ours. ;)

— Death by Blonde, submitted by Daron Nefcy
Death by Blonde is a music video/short story by animator Daron Nefcy featuring music by DeVotchka, off their album Una Volta. The animation is well done, and the design of the film is beautiful. Great job.

— Twins Crimson and Those Amazing Robots, submitted by Carlos Ramos
From the vaults of Frederator’s Oh Yeah! Cartoons, the cartoon cryptkeepers pull out “Twins Crimson” by Carlos Ramos. Even dusted off, this is still good.

This Thursday on The Meth Minute 39 we got the return of The Music Nerds, Vic & Cougar, on tap with “The Music Nerds Do Karaoke”.

I have a big urge to chew some doublemint gum right now.

Cool things We’ve been Eyeing on the Web Lately:

I wanted to highlight my buddy Pen Ward in this edition of cool things all up on the webbage. Because Pen’s Cool like that.

Limited Edition Adventure Time T-Shirts created exclusively by Adventure Time Creator Pen Ward. Wear them and don’t be naked.

Adventure Time. Just in case you missed it the first time around. When is this gonna be on tv already?!?

I know Pen’s working on his site, but it’s too fun NOT to share it. Plus Bueno beatboxes.

Smoke Monster Short of DOOM

Mind the Kitty

February 26th, 2008

(NSFW, due to an impressive string of curse words and smokey angst)

So I know this has nothing to do with Mind the Kitty, but I thought I would share nonetheless. I am a huge Lost fan, and I started this little Youtube short several months ago and just got around to finishing it last night. It’s far from brilliant–actually, it’s pretty ridiculous–but I thought it came out funny enough.

My coworker Peter M from Renegade voiced the Smoke Monster…most of it is just him improvising. He has the mad voiceover skills, and is also the voice of Mr. Messy on The Mr. Men Show. Thanks Pete!

Enjoy!

Animated Johnny Cash

In “El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer” (also known as “The Mysterious Voyage of Our Homer”), Homer takes a bad trip after eating some “Insanity Chili” and meets his spirit guide, voiced by Johnny Cash. It was amazing to me how well Johnny Cash’s voice worked for animation. It’s a shame he didn’t do more voice work. Today would have been Johnny Cash’s 76th birthday.

I looked and looked for a clip from the show, but couldn’t find one. Here’s a clip of Johnny Cash singing with Oscar from Sesame Street instead.

Have a rotten day!

“The Dukes” (1983-1984) was the animated series from Hanna-Barbera, based on “The Dukes of Hazzard” (1979-1985).

The cartoon series started during the Coy and Vance part of “The Dukes of Hazzard”, and featured them as the main characters as well. When actors Tom Wopat and John Schneider returned to “The Dukes of Hazzard”, they took over as the stars of the cartoon as well.

That’s right, Penalty & LLoyd of “Nite Fite” are back on the airwaves in a couple weeks. I won’t reveal anything about their newest debate topic but I’ll show you some screenshots. The amazing thing about a Nite Fite cartoon is the way their arguments go on one tangent after another yet with there’s some sort of logical progression. Can you believe all these disparate images are from the same cartoon?

about_carlos.jpg

Carlos Baena has been around the animation industry, working at many of the top animation studios in the country, as well as being one of the co-founders of the online animation school, Animation Mentor. Originally from Spain, in 1994 Baena moved to the US to study art and he’s been here ever since.

One of the great things about Carlos is his willingness to share his knowledge with others, not just through Animation Mentor, but on his own website as well. It’s full of interesting articles and recommended reading to help you take your animation to the next level. Take a look!

Meet The Beatles

I’ve never been shy about touting my love for the Beatles. It’s pretty clear to me that I’m in this business because of the Fabs turned me on to the breadths and depths of popular culture and media. In fact, I dropped out of pharmacy college with the offhanded statement to a classmate that “The Beatles mean more to me than this class.” To anyone that wants to listen I’m fond of saying there’s a metaphor for every creative (and business) situation to found by looking closely at John, Paul, George and Ringo.

My wife pretty much feels the same way about Bob Dylan.

So, how happy were we with the latest Meth Minute 39?

When cable was high tech.

ROOM AT THE TOP FOR YOUTH IN HIGH TECH

My friend and former colleague, media professor Jay Newell, sent me this picture and article from The New York Times (July 1982) to remind me how skinny I once was. It’s about youth in the then new media of cable television at the company we worked at (now called MTV Networks), and one line in particular struck me as relevant to today’s new media. MTV executive producer Julian Goldberg says,

”Look at those faces,” he said, pointing to a group in jeans and T-shirts. ”At the networks, some of them would be ‘gofers.’ Here they’re directors, producers, they’re in charge.”

It’s true again today, only now it’s also true in cable TV too. Or, as my friend Mississippi Fred McDowell once said, “Here we are again, doin’ that same ole thing.”

Look around Next New Networks, and everywhere else in the internets too.
