Lucky lucky, we’ll never go hungry again! Er… I mean we made it into the Siggraph Festival! Congratulations to Boneheads as it was selected to be screened at Siggraph. It was originally rejected, but due to popular demand they took another look and decided to put it in!

Boneheads is a crazy whacked out CG Random Cartoon created by the incredibly talented Animation Studio, Polygon Pictures. It is the story of two prehistoric Boneheads and their struggle to keep their claim on their babanna!

Enjoy some visuals!

Recently the Director, Hiroshi Chida, and Producer, Shuzo Shiota, of Boneheads came over from Japan to direct the voice recording for the show. I was fortunate to be able to attend because it was a blast. Two of the most talented voice actors, Dee Bradley Bakerand John Kassir , provided the voices for Bone and Roccos and a whole bunch of other crazy creatures. The sounds they made were amazing and hilarious at the same time. Due to the fact that the show is pretty much completed it was more of a dub then a recording but it worked out well and was fun to watch.

Sorry it’s been a while since the last post so here’s a big one!

One thing can be said for Boneheads and that is that it has a style all its own. But Boneheads didn’t always look like this. The original design was a lot fleshier and looked a lot more human.

Here is an explanation by Bonehead’s Creative Producer, Kenji Ishimaru, on why they made the change and how they came up with the new design.

The reason why we did not use the original character design was because we felt that it looked to old fashion. It just did not work for the new concept that we had in mind.

In the new concept we aimed to create something fresh and edgy looking. Something unlike anything we’ve seen out there. To really express a character from the primitive age, we tried to design them with edgy unrefined forms with powerful colors. This style should help to define simple actions and help out the strait forward stories and jokes.

To accomplish our concept we had to find a good character designer. Fortunately we found Mr. Kenzi Murabayashi and his work on the internet. His great work was perfect for our new concept and ideas.

Oh Yeah Cartoon
It just so happened that at the time we found him, he was having an exhibit of his work in Tokyo. This gave us the perfect opportunity to meet him, considering he lives in Osaka, a town about three hours outside Tokyo. We hired him on the spot so that he may begin designing the Bonehead characters immediately. The encounter with Kenzi was one of the most important things to happen to this project. We believe that without his design, we wouldn’t have gotten the Oh Yeah Cartoon spot.

Interesting side note, Mr. Kenzi Murabayashi actually designed the characters in wood. If you would like to see more of Kenzi’s work please visit his personal blog at:
http://www.kenzi.tv/

Bone

Roccos and Bone are the two main characters in Boneheads. Here is some info on their characters in Japanese by the Boneheads Creative Producer, Kenji Ishimaru.

–Bone and Roccos are pair hungry guys from a very primitive era. At the time food is very scarce. They are not that friendly with each other but do help one another to get food.

–Bone is your typical bonehead. He acts with out thinking and obeys only his instinct which just so happens to be his appetite. Because of this he gets into trouble, and most of the time he doesn’t even notice he’s in a bad situation. He is really aggressive but yet innocent at heart. He expresses his anger and joy directly to his pal Roccos.

– Compared to Bone, Roccos is a bit smarter and more thoughtful. He always stands back while Bone does his thing. But in the end Roccos will always get his food before Bone does. Even though he is smarter he still acts on his appetite. This causes him to make big mistakes and to get into trouble as well. But in a bad situation his simple and rash actions will always solve the problem.

–Kenji and Hadley

Greetings Cartoon Bloggers!

Hello! Hadley here, writing on behalf of Polygon Pictures in Japan. I work for Radar Cartoons which is the company that represents Polygon in the U.S. So I’ll be blogging for them. To give you a little back ground info, Polygon is an award-winning CG studio from Japan that has been around for over 23 years!

Radar is very proud to introduce Polygon’s short for Random Cartoons. It’s a CG film called Boneheads! Boneheads is about Bone and Rocco, two prehistoric creatures and their pursuit for bananas. The cartoon is very quick, colorful, and crazy. It’s like nothing out there.

That’s it for now. I’ll be posting more pics and creator bios very soon so keep checking back!
