The Amazing Jeff Bennett
There are no small parts, only small actors. Boy is this true, and never has this been made more clearer than by JEFF BENNETT at our voice over session.
Everyone was brilliant that day but I have to go out of my way to give a special tip of the hat to JEFF BENNETTwho played all of the back ground characters who had the fewest lines and screen time. He managed to give every character a thoughtful characterization and personality. Sometimes with as little as one line!
I was floored at not only his versatility, but his innovation at making even one line special and the incredible difference of each vocal performance. At times it sounded like there were 20 people in the booth instead of 4. It reminded me a famous story about Daws Butler. There was a director who during a Hanna-Barbera recording session had asked the actors in the booth to slow down because they were stepping on each others lines and overlapping the dialogue, only to be surprised when he looked up to see only Daws in the booth. Now that is voice acting!
Thanks Jeff, you were amazing!
Bloggingly yours, Manny and Alan

I actually know this name. He does the voice of Johnny Bravo right?
And did I actually beat Stephen to the post? You should give out prizes for first post.

I have to agree with this post 100%. Jeff also did a voice in our cartoon and was absolutely hilarious. A few weeks after our record I still laugh every time I hear his voice.

What cartoon is yours? Jeff was my number one choice for the background characters and I was so glad he was available. We had an idea in our heads of what all the characters sounded like but were open to suggestions. Jeff came up with some great ideas on the spot that took us away from what we had in mind but was ridiculously funny. I felt like he deserved his own BLOG posting. And I can only hope that I make another short if only to work with him.

Yup, me too. I met jeff years ago on my first 2nd short for Fred, the Ignoramooses and he brought such character to the biologist in my film that it stood out very well. He’s great! He also does the voice of Clay on Xiaolin Showdown which I directed last year. So mnay voices coming out of one guy! Amazing! Oh yeah ahdn he DOES do the voicve of Johnny Bravo as well as Tex Tinstar and so many others. Good choice guys!

LIke I said, I was simply blown away. And I have worked with a lot of voice talent in my time. I wish I had been able to really thank him while he was there, my head was reeling from everything going on that I don’t remember showering him with the praise he deserved. Are you reading this Jeff? I tried to get your e-mail!

Yeah, I worked very briefly with the versatile Jeff on a 6-months-into-it-cancelled sequel to Treasure Planet. He did an extremely eerie impression of David Hyde Pierce. Cool guy!

I meant eerie, as in accurate. Not some creepy twisted version or anything like that. Although that’s something I’d like to hear.

Jeff is amazing. He’s in my short HORNSWIGGLE as Jungleman ZAN-TAR and really plussed the film. He did a hilarious ad-lib which made it into the final picture, “What did you do with my monkey?” - which has become my favorite line in the cartoon.
How many RANDOM CARTOONS is Jeff in? I bet he sounds completely diffeent in each!

Wow! Hes been in like everyones show! I bet hes gonna be every character in some show to come! -Steve

He’s a suave, Cary Grantish dog in Pat’s “The Dangerous Duck Brothers”, too.

Hey Manny, I guess I did forget to say the name of our cartoon. Our(Plapp and Angelo) cartoon is called Bradwurst and Jeff plays a Hippo named Charlie.

He also does an eerie inpression of John Cleese. He did a lot of stuff on Histeria which was mostly celebrity impersonations. His John Cleese is so dead-on you would swear it is him. I’ve often wondered what the celebrity’s think of that. I mean here is a guy getting paid to be this other guy, in effect taking money from him by mimicking his act. Great stuff, but I wonder what the real actors think. I guess it all comes down to whether they’re so busy they don’t have time for some small-time cartoon or not.
