Call Me Bessie!

Mix and MusicMeister

May 11th, 2006

Well folks, we are back from Los Angeles and are proud to say that Call Me Bessie! is now complete. And it turned out even better than we expected (we don’t mind saying)! But before we write that final, sad, sappy blog where we thank everyone who made our dream of bringing a hyper happy cow and paranoid elephant to life, we want to thank someone who thus far has been somewhat overlooked (fortunately, when Diane finally got around to cleaning out the dust bunnies from her bellybutton, we found him!).

The man pictured here is noneother than musicmastermeistro Peter Lurye. We have been working with this musical genius for the past couple of months to create the music and score for Call Me Bessie! Peter brought to the project his wicked sense of humor, talent and generosity (especially with his time), not to mention some really good scoring and composing…We love you Peter and thank you for all of your hard work. Hopefully, you won’t be 101 years old by the time we hire you to work on our SERIES. By then, maybe, we’ll actually be able to pay you for ALL of your time.

Rock on brutha!

That’s great and all, but what the heck is he holding in that picture?!!

Why it’s the secret to every musician’s success of course! It’s the SUGAR MONSTER! Duh… :)

WOOHOO! I can’t wait to see the final picture…hey, you never stopped by to say hi…boooooooooooooooh.

Aliki, lovey, we did stop by but all the doors were closed, locked, shut down…we were SHUT OUT! :) Plus we were only there for a short time…most of our time was spent offsite doing post. We MISS you!!! Come to NYC!

I won’t embarrass myself or Peter by saying how long we know each other, but after a multi-decade hiatus, we reconnected when I heard the great music he did for a Nick show called “Allegra’s Window”. Since then he’s been involved with lots of wonderful scores and songs, including the theme for “My Life as a Teenage Robot” and songs for “Teacher’s Pet.” I’m most amused by his stint with PDQ Bach, but then again I’ve got strange taste: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000FDBK/002-1004634-5018462?v=glance&n=5174

CONGRATULATIONS DIANE AND DANA!!!!!!!
MAN; WHAT A BLAST!
I’M LOOKING FORWARD IN SEEING THE FINAL PICTURE!
TAKE CARE YOU GUYS AND WE’LL TALK SOON!
ALL THE BEST!
YOUR CARTOON PALS….. JEFF AND THE FINSTERS

PS: IT LOOKS LIKE PETER IS HOLDING A GIANT CUPCAKE OR A GIANT WEIRD PIECE OF SUSHI.

We’re going to have one major PARTY!!!!

It’s actually a giant sushi cupcake. There’s nothing like a mess o’ pound cake, vanilla buttercream, chocolate chips, and raw tuna surrounded by a hard blue sugary substance of indeterminate origin to end any music screening session on just the right note. But of course I must give credit where credit is due — Dana bought it. No, no, I insist you get the credit, Dana.
Well, to reiterate my email to Dana/Diane in response to their comments here, I’ll summon all the eloquence at my disposal to say, “Aw, shucks!” It was a delight working with both of you/them, and we should all be proud of the final result.
And thanks yet again to Fred, who, while he’s been busy during the last decade-plus reinventing and reinvigorating the world of cartoons, has done me countless good turns.

Well, Dad, once again, I, Jacob Lurye, and my little bro Sam Lurye, were among the first kids on earth to see a super cool show and/or cartoon. This being a topic I do not take lightly, I must place myself in the shoes of others who have not had a chance to experience such a great show. And I sob to think that those kids have not yet gotten to see this li’l piece o’ heaven on TV. These poor, poor kids should be sobbing along with me. I would be sobbing for them, they would be sobbing for Bessie. I must thank Dana and Diane as I say, “Well golly gee, that is goooooooooood!!!”. And as my father said before, and as I will say now for those poor children: “Aw, Shucks!!”

(put comment in wrong place, check below J-man)

Congratulations - I can’t wait to see it!

Jacob L, YOUR ROCK brutha! We are soooooo delighted that you love the show. Now just get out there and tell all yur friends that Bessie is a comin’ (and she’s draggin’ a curmudeonly, yet loveable, elephant)!

I will.

Hi, Diane
It’s so great to see your project. It looks beee-yootiful! I’m not sure if you remember me, but you sat me down back in 2004 when I was fresh out of school and showed me how storyboards worked. I was watching Pinky and the Brain on DVD recently and thought of you. I’m also trying ot hone my storyboard skills further.
Stay in touch! Please feel free to drop me a line at jake@jakefriedman.net.
thanks. ttfn!

OMG!!! Had to hear it from Yvette about your show since I’m SO out of the loop. Congrats D and D!!! Can’t wait to see it! Always knew that the double dose of D genius would make great cartoon history.

Hey Diane,
What’s all this about and why didn’t you tell me? When, where and how can I see this? Congratulations and next time you’re in LA look me up. I’m still at MYP!
-Jeff
