Episode 53

When death comes a-knockin’, make sure he has the right address…

This Halloween, we’re proud to feature Austin Madison’s Cal Arts film, “The Ending”, which also won the Student Choice Award of this year’s CalArts Producer’s Show.

I remember sitting there watching it, and actually being very frightened! The way that Austin knows how to play up the suspense with his camera angles, and expressions is unbeatable. The film may be in a fairly rough format, but it truly doesn’t matter. This one is a winner. Watch it. You’ll see what I mean.

Austin, how did you come up with this idea?

“My favorite characters in films are villains, and I always thought it’d be fun to do a film involving one of the world’s scariest bad guys, Death. At first it seems that Death is this inescapable force, but then you hear of people cheating Death and you think, hey I guess the guy can make mistakes. So I thought it’d be fun to portray the Reaper as a bumbling and somewhat pleasant guy just out to do his job to the best of his ability. The voice of Death, Arthur Horowitz, gave him just the right humanity to sell the idea.”
