Will the real Ghostbusters please stand up?

October 26th, 2006

With Halloween just around the corner, I thought I’d talk a bit about the Ghostbusters. As a kid, I was confused by the coexistance of these shows.

This one was based on the popular movie:

And after some digging, I found that this one was based on a live action CBS series from the mid 70’s:

And here is the intro to THAT show:

Kind of interesting, huh?

Interesting business story here: the way I understand it, Lou Scheimer from Filmation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filmation) had the rights to the title “Ghostbuesters” long before the famous movie was even written. The movie was shot and finished when he sued the studio and made millions (maybe even a royalty) and the right to make “The Original Ghostbusters.”

Man, I liked that Larry Storch / Forrest Tucker live-action Filmation series a lot when I was a kid. Storch and Tucker also voiced characters in the Ghostbusters cartoon based on the series, also by Filmation. All before the Bill Murray movie.

I thought it was interesting that the live action piece that it all came from was done by Lou Scheimer. I hadn’t ever really associated Filmation with live action.

Being reminded I barely saw Scheimer’s animated series as much as I did with the other.

Given the stuff you see on YouTube, I was going to upload a version of Filmation’s GhostBusters opening, but overdubbed with another tune of a similar nature that worked too well for it!
