TV Cartoon Stars?

November 13th, 2006

Okay. So I’m writing this essay for the Channel Frederator Awards. My topic is TV cartoon stars. I mean really, really big TV cartoons stars. Like, Flintstones and SpongeBob size. My take is there have only been a half dozen or so, ever. Any thoughts?

I agree, I really don’t think there are too many. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few including Simpsons, Ren and Stimpy, Yogi Bear, and…ummm…of course we can’t forget the Carebears!

You’re probably right Eric. I’d say there would be a dozen at least tho. Scooby Doo would have to rate fairly high on the list.

Power Puff Girls and Dexters Lab!!

I think one benchmark for decision is whether or not knock-offs have been made in foreign countries because after all if you can find a Sponge Bob statue in Malaysia, he’s pretty popular.
My picks would be Peter and Stewie Griffin, Sponge Bob, Homer Simpson, Bart Simpson, Ren, Stimpy, Fred Flintstone, He-Man, Inspector Gadget, Pink Panther. You did not say well animated cartoon characters. Then of course if you’re going to get technical, Tony the Tiger, Snap Crackle and Pop, The Honey Nut Cheerios Bee should all count as they are very well known throughout the world. It seems since Bugs and Daffy had their own TV show in the 70’s they would count as well, and lastly now that Mickey has a show on the Disney Channel, he counts too!

Eric, did you read the essay I wrote?

As much as we’d like to, don’t forget SCOOBY DOO. Seems to me SOUTH PARK and BEAVIS & BUTTHEAD were signature series for their respective networks.

Do THE ARCHIES qualify for your list?

Well, it’s all a matter of opinion, I guess. Certainly Scooby, in my book. But I’m thinking really big. Like the difference between Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Think of your non-cartoon-watching parents or that farmer in Nebraska. Whom would they recognize? PS Would you put Bugs on the list?

I think Optimus Prime and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might deserve an honourable mention as well… but that depends on whether toy commercials count as cartoons.

Definitley Bugs Bunny!!

I thought Astroboy was pretty big in the 60s and 80s? The 2003 series saw no love though.
