Why “Cartoonist of the Year”?
A number of you have asked me why we’ve bothered to creator the awards category for Cartoonist of the Year?
Well, it’s seemed to me over the years that the missing component in discussing cartoons is often the talent making the films. Even within the industry the awards aped the Oscars or Emmys and often didn’t acknowledge the influentials in our medium. One year the most important area of cartoons might have been the independents (like when Mike Judge or Zbig Rybczynski have led the way), or television (when the Simpsons or Ren & Stimpy woke everyone up), or, yes, features (whether it’s Little Mermaid or Toy Story).
But the hierarchy always says the feature of the year is the most important. And I just think that’s wrong.
I know this year hasn’t been the greatest in cartoons. But every year has important talent in our lives. Let us know what you think. We’ll tell the rest of the world about it.

The “Brothers Chaps,” creators of Strong Bad and Homestar Runner seem to me to be some of the most original, relevant, and prolific artists of the decade. I’m serious here! What other ‘cartoonists’ sum up our current era better than those guys? The award should go to them, hands down!

I enjoy their work, how exactly do you mean that they “sum up our era?”

John K. should be the cartoonist of the year. His blog, johnkstuff.blogspot.com, has had almost 2 million hits, not to mention is one of the most fantastic animation blogs on the blog-o-sphere. He has had fantastic stories, outstanding tips, and unbelievable history tid bits from studios past. Johns contribution to modern cartoon making is second to none. Please consider John K. as cartoonist of the year.

Well, now that this contest has started, I’m actually voting for my fave Andrew Dickman. Already, I’m a fan. He’s really new. You hardly need to give him a chance before you see why I would pick him. He already has a cartoon coming out and has several flashes already done. (Even if Homestarrunner always does flashes)
