Tracy Ullman Simpsons Shorts
Long before Bart and Lisa and Homer and Marge became household names, they were just small interstitial shorts shoved between comdey skits on a TV series called The Tracy Ullman Show on the fledgling Fox Network. Originally overseen by David Silverman and animated at Klasky Csupo, they’ve changed quite a bit since their beginnings, getting more refined and polished along the way but there was something special about those first small shorts. Needless to say they became a phenomenon that we all know and love today.
Check out the first cartoon where Homer & Marge say goodnight to their kids, scaring them with philosophy and “bedbugs”.

I love these Tracy Ulman Simpsons the best. not so much the crude designs seen in the clip above, but once they had the designs we know of now, but with that crazy arse animation. You know, before they streamlined them to the point where they had no new expressions ever again.

The original loose design and the spastic animation combined to produce something original and new, just like the Tracy Ullman show, itself. The brilliance of these shorts was washed out when the show became a half-hour program and even more so when it went to Film Roman. Ah well!
