Disney presents: Roving Mars

March 15th, 2007

I went to the Museum of Natural History on 81sts street a couple weeks ago, and I went to the imax screening of a film do called “Roving Mars.” It’s exec-produced by Disney but really produced by a company called “Maas Digital,” which should take due credit for some of the best CG animation I’ve seen in a long time.

There is a certain cinematic touch to the doc that reaks of Disney. And, admittedly, some the CG graphics a a smidge off. However, for the most part, it is as if a camera crew was off in space documenting the journey of these shuttle-encapsuated-rovers through billions of miles. Physics never looked so accurate in CG animation, and space travel never so lucid.

Hey cool Jake, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I was on the tiny team of artists who worked on this at Maas Digital in lil’ ol’ Ithaca NY. Dan Maas is an extraordinarily gifted CG artist and director, and it was a great experience getting to work for him on such a cool project. And yes, scientific accuracy was a high priority during production… the landing sequences, for instance, are based on telemetry data recorded during the real rover landings. It’s about as close as you can get to actually being there. :)
