I want my Maypo!
The Hubleys were brilliant with their animation commercial work. As New York artists and animators, they told great vignettes of the innocence of childhood, young love, etc. As business partners, they tackled projects which could only add to their portfolio, stretch their storytelling skill, and broaden their fan base, not to mention fund films like “Windy Day,” “The Hat” and the Oscar-winning “Moonbird.”
The voice of “Marky Maypo” is in fact Mark Hubley. John and Faith Hubley often used their own kids as the voices in order to receive residual checks. While animators get a one-time salary, actors get paid every time the piece airs. As the story goes, the money went into a fund just for the four Hubley children.
If you can find it, there’s a moment in “The Iron Giant” in which Hogarth watches a Marky Maypo commercial, no doubt a tip o’ the hat to the Hubleys.

…:::An update from Fred: Jerry Beck at Cartoon Brew turned us onto Homestat Farm’s posting of the Maypo spots last year, and we played one in Episode 21 (below).
