Odd From Every Angle, A Channel Frederator Featured Film

June 20th, 2007

I particularly enjoyed Russel Etheridge’s short, Odd From Every Angle. It really captures the alcohol induced absurdity and surrealistic moments of the blackouts that we prefer to keep hidden under the rugs. Not that I go around as drunk as Charles Bukowski or Hunter S. Thompson, but I’ve had my fair share of hazy moments of hornicorns & clowns, robots & monkeys and who knows what else.

Russel’s short bends the rules, daring to combine traditional 2d, cg, live action and other various techniques. It’s refreshing and very exciting to see something like this, and I’m glad we’re helping to make it spread.
Thanks for submitting Russel!

1. How did you come up with the idea for this film?
The original sound track had a sort of ice falling into a glass sound all the way through, so the idea kind of stemmed from that. I figured out that the drink sound occurred roughly 27 times through the track, so a character on the fringes of alcohol poisoning was an obvious step! The sound track was changed recently because the original artist didn’t agree with the alcoholic content and I couldn’t get proper permission to use it… I prefer the new one anyway!

The melting wall shot is sort of a reference to Fear & Loathing. You see different areas of the bar up to three times, each time you see one again it gets stranger. I stated off with just normal bar scenes and let my imagination wonder!

2. Who are some of your influences?
So many! Recently probably Baginski, David Lynch, Aesop Rock, Boards of Canada, my friends and family….. but I guess I should really put it all down to peer pressure or media brainwashing.

3. What do you do when you get stuck creatively?
Stop thinking about it and do something different, is prob the best you can do… however if I’m on a tight deadline just make something crap and blame it on someone else :D nah jus jokin.

4. Have you ever gotten this drunk where this actually happened? I think I might’ve once or.. uh… twice. Too much info. Although I never saw a giant robot before, that would be awesome.
Well that’s me in the movie, so technically yes! Although I gotta say the research for this one was pretty rough at points!

5. What are you working on currently?
I’ve just finished my degree so just organising our exhibition for next week. But I should be starting work on some animation for a kids game soon, the concept sounds great so the work should be pretty fun!

Thanks again for submitting Russel! Great stuff! Keep us posted as to new projects on your horizon!
