Popeye meets Betty Boop
Here is the first Popeye cartoon from Max Fleischer. It’s a little bit odd to see, since it’s really a Betty Boop cartoon that Popeye kind of takes over. Popeye, Olive, and Bluto all interact with Betty Boop and the characters from her world.
Popeye was a comic strip character long before he was a cartoon star, but even so it was interesting to me to see just how much of the Popeye character they nailed right out of the gate, including the song, character voices, and pace of the cartoon… all things they invented for the medium of animation.
If you are a Popeye fan, you’ll soon be able to own the four disc set “Popeye the Sailor: 1933-1938, Vol. 1″. The DVD set will be in stores July 31st.
