Entre Engranes, A Channel Frederator Featured Film!
I used to play with boxes when I was a kid. At different time it was a car, a boat, tank, castle, fortress, airplane, time machine, igloo, anything my tiny 5 year old imagination could muster up. I still look at boxes and still see a whole world of possibilities, but I don’t quite fit in them much the same way I used to.
In Entre Engranes, Jonathon O Yaber shows us what would happen if we lived in a cardboard world.
He also took the time to answer a few of our Channel Frederator Questions…

1. How did you come up with the idea for this film?
The idea of Entre Engranes came from reasearching about music videos and animations which use the audio and music forms to create visuals for it. I’m a bg fan of Norman Mclaren’s work, so it gave me so much ideas and inspiration. I started developing a character that could be as simple as possible and at the same time would react to the audio that surrounded him, so thats how I came up with this idea of having everything made of cardboard and paint.
2. Who are some of your influences?
Michel Gondry of course! I think hes one of the most influential directors of our time and he has the power to communicate with very simple ideas but a perfect visual treatment for them. Also Marc Craste (Jo jo in the stars), Norman Mclaren, Yuri Nosrtein (Tale of tales), Sylvain Chomet, and so on (too many!!! I think to put them in these lines).
3. What do you do when you get stuck creatively?
I go out, and try to never complicate things and just let them flow. If i got stuck, it’s a sign that I need to watch whats happening outside, have some laughs and enjoy what my friends and family can give to me. Not just suffer because of my work is not flowing. I draw a lot, sculpt, paint, watch movies, enjoy being with my girlfriend, etc. What ever makes me happy works!
4. Were you always playing with cardboard boxes when you were younger?
Yes , I always imagined myself being in such wonderful planets and worlds and maybe have my own castle, or being chased by some spies or try to destroy some evil forces, and I was always getting into trouble because my parents will try to buy me very nice toys and I will use more the cardboards and boxes of them instead of the complex toys! Til now, I still try to imagine and play in this way, hehe.
5. What are you working on currently?
I’m working on my next short film, entitled The Nostalgia of Mr Wire, and developing new ideas for next new works to come after this!
Thank you for submitting Entre Engranes to Channel Fred Jonathon!
