Who likes doing the dishes? Not me.
I’m a fan of paper plates. Roger Gihlemoen spins the tale around and gives us the dishes side of things, the dirty side.

1. How did you come up with the idea for this film?
Dirty dishes has always frightened me, especially the thought of it suddenly coming to life. When it had piled up for some time, in my one-room student apartment, I got inspired and made the whole kitchen in 3D. It´s incredible how much life you can find inbetween leftovers…

2. Who are some of your influences?
I´ve always liked the “Disney tradition” of giving life to “dead things”. I have made a few shortfilm, usually with a strange twist. And, of course, Steven Spielberg is my hero!

3. How long did it take you to produce dishes, and what type of process went into creating the short?
I used about four months of night work besides school. The render alone took a month. I started by sketching ways the different knifes and forks would move. I sketched a lot more than I used at the end. Like plates using spatulas as wings. I actually planned to make much longer film, but found a challenge in making it real short(1min). I then made a poem, in which every line was five seconds. Then I timed the animation after the poem.

4. Do you like doing dishes, and what are your thoughts on paper dishes?
As all normal human beings I just LOVE to do the dishes. Me and my wife often use to soak ourselves in soap and jump eagerly into the kitchen with joy! I mean, where´s the fun in paper dishes? They don´t need cleaning do they?!!

5. What are you working on currently?
Until recently I worked at a TV-production company in Norway, where I produced graphics for most of the Norwegian TV channels. In short I designed profiles for different TV shows. But at the moment I´m working on a really exciting project with another production company, here I am going to learn motion capture. I´m really excited! Like a child with a brand new dishbrush in his hand!

And on that note, I actually have to go buy a little scrubber brush thingie for my dirty cups in the sink. I just hope they spring to life and eat me or something. The Horror
Thanks for submitting Roger!
