Surf’s Up: The Making of the Animated Documentary

August 15th, 2007

If you liked the movie “Surf’s Up”, but couldn’t make it to Siggraph this year for the half day course about the making of the film, then you are in luck.

HERE is a HUGE PDF of the course notes from the presentation. They cover every aspect of production from the initial character designs, to rigging, to effects animation, to an enormous section on the technology behind the waves that helped make the film so wondrous to watch.

“Surf’s Up” will be available on DVD and Blu Ray on October 9th.
UPDATE: I fixed the broken link to the PDF file.

Wow… thank goodness… I always wanted to learn how to make an unbearably awful movie.

Did you see the film? Can you explain what you thought was so awful? It would be interesting to know what you disliked about it, as I thought it was a great film.

“Wow… thank goodness… I always wanted to learn how to make an unbearably awful movie.”

Wow, someone’s jealous.

Yes… of course… who wouldn’t be jealous of such a fine film?

Hi. Does anyone happen to have the PDF itself? I have been trying to download from the 185vfx.com website, but the link seems to be down. Anyone has a copy to which I can download from?

It looks as though the link has gone away. I’ll see if I can find it anywhere else and update the link.

William, I just updated the link. Sony is hosting the pdf file now.

To Smithy:

Is it just because John K doesn’t like it?

Tristan: No… it’s because it’s a really bad movie.

Would it be too much to ask of you what you thought was so horrible about it?
I mean, it’s not the best film ever, but I found it to be somewhat enjoyable.

Everything about it was horrible. Story, designs, concept… everything.
That’s my opinion. If you liked it, I’m happy for you.
