Cartoon gags: The Anvil

March 3rd, 2008

While watching some Tom & Jerry cartoons with my kids, we saw a gag where a duck was pulling an anvil around by a rope. The anvil kept hitting Tom in various ways. My kids asked me what that thing was, and I realized that some of the best cartoons have gags that rely on outdated or obscure technology. Luckily, we’re here to help.

An anvil is a manufacturing tool, made of a hard and massive block of stone or metal used as a support for chiseling and hammering other objects, such as in forging iron and steel items.

Here we have a prime example of the anvil in action. I would argue that the anvil never really hit it’s stride until the invention of animation.

Anvil action begins at 3:10

Do you have a piece of cartoon technology from the past you think we should highlight? Let us know in the comments!

Here’s one: those pink hot water bags people put on their heads in cartoons when they’re sick. Some countries still sell them.

How about those old fireplace bellows (used to blow air into the fire)? They were used time and time again in the Tom and Jerry cartoons! I’m sure they’ve appeared in warner bros. cartoons too.
