New “Heavy Metal” film in the works
B-17 segment from “Heavy Metal”.
Variety is reporting that Paramount Pictures will make an animated film inspired by the ’70s sci-fi fantasy magazine Heavy Metal, with director David Fincher spearheading the project.
Fincher will direct one of the segments; Kevin Eastman, the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” co-creator who is now owner and publisher of Heavy Metal, will direct another. So will Tim Miller, whose Blur Studios will handle the animation for what is being conceived as an R-rated, adult-themed feature.
Here’s a quote from Tim Miller on the project: “And just to save people time….It will not resemble in any way shape or form Heavy Metal 2000 and most of the stories aren’t coming from the magazine. It will be a mix of Sci fi, Fantasy, Humor, Horror, etc. with lots of cool violence and lots of naughty bits. It won’t be an “Homage” tot the original film–which I loved–this will be an entirely re-imagined beast and EXACTLY the kind of film Heavy Metal SHOULD be. Blur is doing all the animation….it will be all 3d….and it will kick major &%*#ing ass.”
I’ve very excited about the project, and I can not wait to see what these super talented people do with this film. I don’t know what they have in store for us, but I would love to see some elements of the previous films make an appearance, specifically Julie Strain and the Lochnar.

There’s typically a fair amount of music (heavy metal one would assume) in the heavy metal films right? I haven’t seen any of the previous ones yet. I love that Fincher is getting involved. I’ve seen some of his music videos. The Nine Inch Nails video for “Only” is all 3d (kind of surprising when you first see it) and is awesome. This sounds sort of like an animated version of Grindhouse. Sort of.

You should check out the first “Heavy Metal” film. Keep in mind that it has very adult themes. The soundtrack was great, and the animation was pretty imaginative.
