Saving the World with Josef Buchner & Friends
A group of students at the University of Applied Sciences at Augsburg (Josef Buchner, Johannes Berner, Tom Kohlbauer, and Janine Ilg) assembled the quirky and informative film “Our Little Word - The Climate Movie” as a class assignment. The results were fantastic, and here to chat with us about the film is animator Josef Buchner.
Channel Frederator: Where did you study animation?
Josef Buchner: We are a group of multimedia and communication design students, who are committed to topics such as sustainability, ecology and ethics. We are right now working on our diploma (thesis) and try to set up our own business, focusing on the visualization of social and ecological relevant topics.
CF: Who or what has influenced your work the most?
JB: For example: Humans! by Three Legged Legs as well as all the great JibJab-clips!
CF: What gave you the idea for this film?
JB: It was created during a student’s project that focused on ecology and climatic change. The story of the elderly couple sitting in their allotment who start to think: “Where does all the stuff we consume actually come from?” makes us see small things in a larger context. It makes one aware of the fact, that decisions we make may have a much broader effect than originally anticipated due to the extreme complexity of interconnections in our world. The film is provocative in an ironic manner and encourages one to look for sustainable alternatives.
CF: Can you talk about any upcoming projects?
JB: We’ll let you know as soon as there is something to see!
CF: What is the most environmentally friendly thing you do on a regular basis?
JB: I guess it’s a box of locally produced and organically grown food that we have delivered every week and first we had to figure out what to do with all this stuff, all the beets and so on 
If you start working on this topic, you actually start thinking a lot more about your daily actions and their impact!
