AAAAAH!

You thought I was freaking out about Tom Jones again, didn’t you? Nope, I’m freaking out about Fernando Reginato, who directed the animated music video for Jones’ single “Give A Little Love”.

Channel Frederator: Where did you study animation?

Fernando Reginato: Animation has always been a part of my life. Since an early age I would be in front of the TV watching cartoons and then trying to draw my favorite characters. I went to a design school in Sao Paulo, and later dropped to study film. The truth is I’ve never been good with schools, but I’ve always been very hard working. I’ve been working with post production for the past six years, and now that I have moved to directing and animating, I finally found myself doing what I’ve always liked.

CF: What has influenced your work the most?

FR: Design, animation, music, love, film, computers, food, photography, big cities and friends. That is very difficult to put in a specific order. Influences come all the time from things that I see and I like, and since I’m a very curious person I find myself being influenced pretty much everyday.

CF: What gave you the idea for this music video?

FR: For “Give A Little Love” the idea came the first time I heard the track, so I turned on a Betty Boop cartoon on and I start to watch listening to the track, it worked perfect. Then I talked to my friend Emma (who directed the video with me) and he also really liked the idea.

We thought that was a very good idea, but very risky. To be honest, I didn’t believe they would go for it so I asked my friends from Birdo Studio in Sao Paulo to design a Tom Jones character for me - and the label loved it!

CF: Can you tell us a little bit about the techniques you used to recreate the 1920’s-30’s style?

FR: The Design and Animation for the video is signed by a great studio called RJDM, they worked very hard to complete the video in four weeks, they also have a great team of designers and animators working together. Basically they had a really good artist designing all the backgrounds, and a team of animators working on the actions, then they composed it all together and sent me the files so I could work on the 30’s look.

CF: Do you know Tom Jones? He’s dreamy, right?

FR: Hehehehe, he really is a legend and I would love to meet him for a few drinks, but that didn’t happen. Anyways… I heard he was very happy with the video!
