Margaux Durand-Rival and fellow students Clément Crocq and Nicolas Novali at Supinfocom Arles created the vibrant, colorful, and imaginative short film “Machu Picchu Post”. Here, Margaux gives us a little insight on the process.

Channel Frederator: Machu Picchu Post is a student film - did you have any instructors who really helped with your work?

Margaux Durand-Rival: As we worked during one year at school, we were surrounded by many different instructors who were there to help us and supervise the development of the project, much more in case of we were lost or if the project had a lot of issues (technical or artistic). But we didn’t have any lessons anymore and it was more to guide us to achieve the project than to be too directive about our short film. In fact teachers were always here if we need advice or technical tips.

CF: What inspired the concept for Machu Picchu?

MDR: It was Clement’s idea, he wanted a simple concept but with a strong background and that’s why he selected the Inca universe; because it’s a very rich iconography with a lot of graphic stuff and it’s was a good challenge to work in 3D.

CF: What was the most difficult part of creating this film?

MDR: Maybe it was the psychedelic trip in the Inca world, because it took a long time a it was a very abstract part for all of us. We had ideas but we didn’t really see the same thing and how to use the 3D to make it look impressive. In fact, we decided to use a lot of things in 2D like the clouds, a lot of matte paintings and camera mapping techniques; but with a real free 3D camera turning in the space like we were flying with the plane. It was really a good challenge.

CF: Do you have any upcoming projects you can tell us about?

MDR: Not for the moment, unfortunately. We may have some individual projects or maybe group projects with other classmates but nothing really clear right now. Maybe in a few months, for my part I hope so! Making a short movie was really a cool experience.

Thanks for the interview, Margaux!
