An Animated Look at the Credit Crunch: An Odd Todd Cartoon

The current economic crisis may be a bit tough to figure out. ABC News showed a great cartoon, created by Odd Todd, to illustrate the crisis in simple terms. You may remember Odd Todd from his very popular “Laid Off” cartoon.
While the economy has been better, and the stock market hasn’t had a great couple of days, at least an independent animator is making some money, and helping the rest of us put things in perspective at the same time.
Honk if You Love Monkmus!
This latest issue of Giant Robot Magazine (#55) has an article about Monkmus, who has drawn and animated music videos for the likes of Badly Drawn Boy (hug-fest “Year of the Rat” is seen above), Kid Koala, Death Cab for Cutie, and Los Campesinos. (The interview is not available online–you have to buy the magazine, and you should!)
His real name is Ken Wong. He lives in NYC and is represented by Hornet. You can peruse his Hornet bio page here. Wong went to RISD, animated for The PJs, in-betweened for Prince of Egypt and collaborated with J. Otto Seibold on a webtoon.
Watch his videos on his YouTube page. Then see the tofu balls he had for lunch when he dined with Giant Robot editor Eric Nakamura.
After the jump, his quietly touching bunny-themed video for “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie. [Read more…]
Alex Toth art
Adam Koford over at Drawn! has posted a great link to Alex Toth art. While some of it has been seen elsewhere, there are some great unpublished pieces. It would be great to see artwork of this caliber in a modern television series.
It’s the New Glue Review
Three episodes of David Fremont’s Glue are now up on YouTube. Glue was an early Flash web series that was produced by Wild Brain during the heady heights of the dot com frenzy.
This blog post from the creator discusses how the series came about.
It’s jam-packed with quite the line-up of crazy characters and a stream-of-consciousness plot executed in Fremont’s trademark funk-patchwork style. Oh…it’s hard to explain…go see it for yourself!
“…I get an abundance of ideas and get anxious to use them all. whatever popped in my head that day ended up in glue. I was kind of like a kid in a puddle of mud making soup; leaves, sticks, an owl’s hairball, all of it went in the bucket. a transvestite troll! an albino frog! yeah, wouldn’t it be funny if ted nugent was in it? and carpet cleaning…”
I hope they post them all, because I’d love to start at the beginning and see how the series evolved. Keep track of what’s up on the Wild Brain YouTube page.
I’m a longtime fan of Fremont’s work, back to the days when he did mostly illustration and comics and designed the board game “Land O Sugar” for Scary Hairy toys–I still have it!

Attack of the Group Shows
It’s your last chance to catch the Crazy 4 Cult 2 show (closing Friday, September 12). Over 100 artists reinterpret classic cult films. Gallery 1988, 7020 Melrose Avenue (at LaBrea), Los Angeles, California. See the YouTube video above if you can’t make it.
On the opposite coast, The Panorama Project opened this weekend at Jonathan Levine Gallery (up until October 4). The exhibit features “commissioned works by over one hundred artists, which will be combined to create a single collective artwork and a site-specific installation.” The gallery is at 529 West 20th Street in NYC.
Moving Pictures
Illustrator James Yang explores the idea that illustrators “can live anywhere” because they don’t have “a real job”. It’s a globe-trotting look at artists and how they create on the move. Part One interviews James Yang (of course), Hanoch Piven (Israel), Michael Bartalos and Fernanda Cohen (United States).
You can watch the entire video here. Also featured are Nate Williams (Argentina), Monika Aichele (Germany), Ingo Fast (Germany), and Laurie Rosenwald (United States).
And P.S.: Hanoch Piven is speaking tonight at the Society of Illustrators in NYC at 6 PM. Tomorrow he is conducting a hands-on workshop at Materials for the Arts (fully booked, alas!) And then onto Toms River, New Jersey!
Blimps, Baby, Blimps!
(Just something else I had never heard of until Pictoplasma NYC. I wish that I had seen this in person!)
