This weeks Cartoon Hangover joint is from Patrick and Kimberly Mallek at Mighty Fudge Studios. Because of the nature of the film, and the increasing number of children tooling around the Channel Frederator blog, I will be *ing anything that might seem… unseemly. Below is an interview with Patrick about the Schoolhouse Rock-ish “My First B*ner”

Cartoon Hangover: Where did you study animation, if at all?

Patrick Mallek: In a van down by the r*ver.

CH: What gave you the idea for “My First B*ner”?

PM: I w*ke up with it. No. Seriously.

CH: “My First B*ner” is credited to you and your w*fe, Kim - is it weird working on b*ner cartoons with your spouse or is it business as usual?

PM: Animated b*ners, crime solving str*ppers, talking gen*talia. Just another day’s work here at Mighty Fudge.

Mike Salva, animator of “Max the Hero” and this week’s Cartoon Hangover ‘toon “Death Row Diet” gives us some background on his work with comedy and capital punishment.

Cartoon Hangover: How did you become so involved with comedy? I mean, as adorable as animated tragedy is…

Mike Salva: I blame it on nine years of Catholic school. Laughter of any kind was discouraged. And I was there when the nuns weren’t allowed to hit the students anymore, so they started punishing the children with mental cruelty. And by golly, those nuns got to be pretty darn good at it!

CH: Why did you approach Jonathan Katz about animating “Death Row Diet”?

MS: I was a big fan of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Jonathan had watched a cartoon I had made called “Max the Hero” and we had talked about Jon doing a voice in a future cartoon of mine, but I didn’t have a particular project in mind. [Read more…]

It’s finally here! The long awaited second half of this article. Happy 2010 to you! Here, I’ve conducted an email interview with the talented comedians who handle the voice work and improv magic in animator Mike Hollingsworth’s short series “Nature Break”.

CF: What is your background in comedy?

Danforth France: I moved to Los Angeles and went through the Groundlings program, learned how to improvise. Then I did a lot of standup in the months between classes. I did a lot of sketch and improv with the Groundlings and my troupe The Pretty Okay Ho-hum Spectacular on Ice, which is now long defunct.

Crush Design UK’s John McCulloch and Helen Crawford-White are responsible for the sweet music video for “Winter Songs” by Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson. Below they tell us about their process and the best way to keep warm in the winter (no, not that).

Channel Frederator: Where did you study animation/filmmaking?

John McCulloch: Helen Crawford-White actually studied Graphic Design at Brighton University, UK, and I studied illustration at Portsmouth University. Working at Crush we have the opportunity to work on such a wide variety of projects that our skills all kind of merge together. As far as studying animation, we are always collecting things that we like and on the look out for things that are visually inspiring and animation is something that we are both really interested in.

Mike Hollingsworth’s animated series “Nature Break” is awesome. Now a hit on the YouTubes and the festival circuit, Mr. Hollingworth found a moment to talk about the series, its voice actors, and the coolest animal on Earth. Mike Hollingsworth: When Fuel TV picked up another season of Stupidface I wanted to do something new. I had created my little black and white Low Tide cartoons for season one and it was time to have fun with COLOR!
