Ksenyia Simonova on Ukraine’s Got Talent…

November 2nd, 2009

This clip is of 24 year old Kseniya Simonova, a Ukrainian artist who won Ukraine’s Got Talent 2009. She uses a giant light box and sand to illustrate (and sometimes, real-time animate) the invasion of the Ukraine during WWII, set to haunting, dramatic music. I love a good Britney Spears impersonator, but this is incredible.

We got such a boatload of submissions for Channel Frederator’s 2-Second Cartoon Contest and it really looks like everyone put a lot of work into their shorts. Thanks to everyone for submitting! I would love for everyone to to win, but we did promise a prize, and that prize goes to Jeff Gill for his short, “First Kiss”. Congratulations, Jeff!

I asked Jeff a few questions about himself and what inspired his 2-second short. Check out his answers below!

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I’m originally from Seminole, FL, but after attending school in Savannah I moved out here to Los Angeles and have worked at a number of really fun studios, including Jib Jab and South Park. Currently we’re hard at work on the 13th season, but during our mid-season breaks I enjoy working on my own side projects including music videos, experimental films, and updating my daily art blog, goodbyespacebar.blogspot.com

Matchless Mather Blather

March 4th, 2009

Richard “Dicko” Mather, who likes to party hearty, is throwing a arty cartoon party:

Dicko’s Cartoon Riff Raff Roundup Festival!

It’s an animation contest at Matchless Bar in Brooklyn, to be held on Friday, March 6th at 9ish. The winner gets a $100 bar tab. Woo hoo! Dicko says “The crowd will pick the winner and I am not eligible to win.” We call that transparency. Matchless Bar is at 557 Manhattan Avenue (at Driggs).

To experience just a bit of the oddness that is Dicko, Watch The Adventures of Sawboy Buck below…and you will be singing the saw song whether you like it or not!

Milking It

October 27th, 2008

We’re all familiar with the classic “Got Milk?” campaign, which was sponsored by the California Milk Processor Board. Now another scrappy milk-promoting trade group, the British Columbia Dairy Foundation, is promoting a video contest on YouTube.

To enter, make a video with the message “Must Drink More Milk” and upload it to YouTube. Each month, two winners will be named. At the end of the year, one Grand Prize winner will win a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air (with Final Cut Pro). Oh yeah, you MUST BE A RESIDENT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA to enter.

I really like the video above, a stop motion fight scene where our underdog champion is a claymation version of one of those wobblies monsters you stick on the end of a pencil. I wish the BCDF would credit the animators and make it clear that eight YouTube videos most prominently posted were done by pros and had “real budgets” and the supervision of an advertising agency. The fight scene is by at Bent Image Lab. (Chel White, Ray Di Carlo, and David Daniels formed this Portland, Oregon studio in 2003.)

For more information about the contest, go to the milkvids YouTube page or the mustdrinkmoremilk website.

PS: For an online gallery of the classic milk mustache ads, check out this link.

PPS: Here are some earlier spots for the BCDF with animation direction by Curious Pictures.

After the jump, another Bent Image Labs video, starring Russian nesting dolls with very annoying voices. And a few videos by an actual contest entrants. [Read more…]
