And…the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York City just announced two upcoming Kim Deitch events:

Cartoon Movie Night (October 30, 7 pm)
Kim Deitch will host a Cartoon Movie Night featuring rarely seen animated cartoons from the 1920s and 1930s hand-picked for the occasion from Deitch’s own personal collection. MoCCA will also display for one night only selected specimens from Deitch and spouse Pam Butler’s extensive collection of antique toy cats.

Deitch Q & A (November 13, 7 pm)
Q & A session with Deitch and exhibit curator Bill Kartalopoulos. Deitch will present examples of recent work and will also preview images from his current works in progress.

Also at MOCCA, a one-day only preview of Heritage Auction Galleries’ November 2008 Vintage Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction, to be more specific…

Today’s Channel Frederator Awards episode features our Best Design winner. We see a lot of amazing cartoons float through here and it was so difficult to choose nominees for this category.

Nina Paley’s “Sita Sings the Blues” trailer was a quick add to our list. The design on this film is truly unique, and Nina managed to find ways of fitting numerous different styles into the same cartoon. “Carlos, My Name Is Not” was the little film that could. This film oozes french influence. Musician Maxime Robin worked with illustrator Pascal Blanchet to create this super-swanky and hip music video. Finally, Dave Wasson was another must-have to our nomination list, and the one to take home the prize for “Max and the Pigeon Incident”!

The fact we’re showing Dave Wasson’s “Tales from the Goose Lady: The Ugly Duck Thing” on Channel Frederator this week inspired me to go deep into the old Oh Yeah! Cartoons vault and pull out the big box of Zip disks (remember them?) full of production art from the short. Well, for some reason, the disk for OY! short #811, “The Ugly Duck Thing”, was missing. So I decided, well, we showed Dave’s “Tales from the Goose Lady: Hamzel and Grande” cartoon back in episode #31, so I can at least blog art from that (#635). Better late than never. It, too, was gone. Sigh. How about #813, “TFTGL: Dot and Randy’s Sad Tale of Woe”? The disk was there, but the $100,000 Mac here had trouble reading the Zip. Ultimately, though, I unwedged a few pieces of art from #812, “TFTGL: The Fisherman, the Fisherman’s Wife, and the Fish”. The quality could be [Read more…]

It’s another average day at the office, until a pesky pigeon steals Max’s pencil. Watch as Max embarks on a death defying journey to get back his #2.

For those of you unfamiliar with Dave Wasson’s work, and where on Earth he came from, some of his credits include: Oh Yeah! Cartoons, “Max and His Special Problem”, featured on Episode 13 of Channel Frederator. “Max” also won an Emmy. Wasson also created the Oh Yeah! short series, “Tales From the Goose Lady”, with “Hamsel and Grande” being featured on Episode 30. He created and directed the series, “Time Squad”, has won a Clio for his commercial work, and animated the opening title sequence to the film, “Down With Love”.
