Flavio Board finished!

May 16th, 2006

Well, I finished my board for the most part. Now I want to go back and plus some of the acting and posing where I can. Of course I’ll have to have another pass at it after it’s recorded and then probably again when i slug the board but I’m pretty happy with the way it came out.
I got a few notes from Larry Huber our producer that really helped it sing and also switched around a bit of dialog to allow for more character.

I’ve been reading a lot about character lately in various books and one of the things that seems to coninuously come up over and over again is that each line of dialog should move the story forward and yet also show something about the character.

In testing my short against that theory, I found a few places where Mr. Frank, the chef wasn’t showing enough of his character and speaking with his own voice. He just said lines, but they could have been Popeye’s lines, or Garfield’s lines for all the personality they showed. I fixed them and now they work better.

Sorry I am posting so much, I am just really excited about his cartoon and I guess I have a lot to say!
I hope no one minds!
Jeffy you’re still the #1 Poster in my book!

Jeffy, is in-fact #1 blogger, but dont worry Mike. You’re runner up!! Cant wait for your short. Post some of the animatic when you can, thatd be great! -Steve http://stephenstudios.blogspot.com

Will do… still have to cast, record and do the animatic but sure I’ll post some when it’s done. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna do it in Flash so it should be pretty easy to post.

When I read those boards, I heard your voice as Flavio. You need to do this guy’s voice! Nice stuff.
I’ll talk to you tomorrow at the all staff meeting. I’ll be one of the electronic voices coming from the box on the table.

I’d love to do the voice. I think it mostly comes down to whether or not I “choke” when I get in front of the mike ya know?

Hey Mike, I hope you didn’t think I was knocking all your posting over at the FINSTERS. I actually like that you post as much as you do. It’s intersting to me to see everyones creative process. We all have similar steps to take, but we all get there differently and that to me, is inspiring. And now, thanks to that little animated test you posted, everytime I see a picture of FLAVIO I hear the JOE DOLCE classic, “Whaddap a you face!” in my head. You bastard! There is goes again…..

Hey Manny,
No that’s cool… I guess it made me realize that I was posting a lot lately. I could actually post even more but I gotta pace my self! Give others a chance ya know? I have so much stuff for Flavio already.
By the way I LOVe the char design you guys did for Bronk and Bongo! So appealing!

Thanks Mike. It took me about a year to settle on the final look of the characters. They weren’t even dogs when I started! I’m thankful to have had the time to really get them where I wanted them to be. And I’m not very good with color so it took me a little longer to figure that out too. Is Flavio something you have lived with for a long time or something you came up with recently for RANDOM? Oh and i mistakenly mis named the song in my previous post “SHADDAP YOUR FACE” is what I meant to type….FAT FINGERS!

I knew what you mean! ;-) Yeah, Shaddupa You face was a family fave when I was a boy. My Grandfather thought it was very funny and we used to sing it together.
You’d never know you weren’t good at color. I think they’re perfect colors as I like that sort of non-realistic color stuff.
Nah, Flavio is something that I came up with very quickly, a record for me… I think it took about a month to write, storyboard, pitch and sell it. A few well placed prayers never hurt either.

Funny though sometimes these quick ideas turn into the best. For me, Flavio is the most complete character I’ve come up with. He’s easy to write for because his character and motivation is pretty clear.
Where are you based? In NYC? or here in L.A.?

I’m based in NYC, which is why I think our production is kind of slow…we are a little disconnected with the studio over there. It’s be nice to work under the same roof with you all…but alas! Yeah we came up with Bronk and Bongo in about a weeks time, the story anyway…but the characters have kept evolving since then. You kind of have to adapt as you go…I should be out there in the next month or so for the VO record, I’d love to meet up with you, Jeff and the other guys at some point. E-mail me or post over at my blog if you want to chew the fat some more. You on iCHAT?

If you are in the e-mail system at Nick you can just look me up. If not you can get it from Eric Homan or Gary Conrad…or I can just post it here for you….

Mike, post more! You’re doing great and making the blog fun and smart. Thanks.

Thanks Fred!
