Flavio Redux
When I first got here I got a little too excited and drew up the entire turn-around the first day but as I’ve been going over the board and trying to find a good line width for my show (I suck at clean-up)
I have decided I didn’t like the first one I did so I went at it trying to do another one.
It’s hard with Flavio because of the sideways mouth he has. the problem is going to be when I he turns his head from 3/4 to side or from frojnt to 3/4 so i had to sit down and figure this ‘lil cartoon corner I painted myself into.
What does it look like from the side?
Is always on the side like this?
Or does it get all “pacman” when he turns like this?

Similarly, the same goes for the front view…
Does it look like this?

Or this?

Well I’ve been messing around with it for weeks trying to decide and yesterday I went into Larry Huber’s office for some help and like the experienced pro he is we hashed out what I believe is best.
He also suggested that I animate the turn from 3/4 to side ( which is what I’m working on now) to show the animators what I want so I do not get any surprises when we get the work print back. Ahh that Larry! He’s on my Good Guy List.

Wait, I thought you were flash animating it?

Flash animating it? Nahhh. I did a “test” to see if I liked the voice for it which I posted a while ago but I want it to be fully animated. I love Flash of course but for this, I think it will come off better looking doing it traditionally.

Dude it never ends. I was working on my characters for a year and still changing things up until the last second and I’m sure somethings will still change as we go into production. I’m a fan of the mouth on the side for FLAVIO I feel it gives him character, the straight on and PAC-MAN mouth feels like what it would be, therefore not as unique or special.
By the way, it looks like we will be out there next Wed. Thursday and Friday doing our VO. Announcement on our blog coming! Hope to see you, you nut!

Yeah cool! It’ll be nice to have a face to go with that biting wit!
As for the side mouth thing I am torn but honestly I like the look of the pacman mouth better. It makes a much better silhoette (sp?)and for me that’s important. I think it’s fair to say that it would be the side mouth from the side but after having played with it enough I came away with the feeling that the side view with the side mouth makes his face start to look like it’s tattooed on instead of having volume and I really don’t want that look. Soooo I opted for the pacman mouth. That said I am gonna do the exposure sheets for it myself and will be able to change it on the fly when I want so I can switch back and forth if I choose depending on the scene’s needs. Thanks for weighing in tho’ and I look forward to finally meeting you face-to-face! It’s 100+ out here man so bring shorts!

Hey Alex! Thanks for giving me your thoughts!

Thanks for sharing these, they look great and I love seeing other artist’s processes! (I have to say I like the mouth on the side best, it reminds me of an E.C. Segar Popeye character, like “The Jeep,” it will work well jumping back and forth using it sometimes)

Hey whussup Mike! The only thing I don’t like about the side mouth thing is it makes him look like his mouth is tattood on or that it’s a balloon with a mouth drawn on it. I’ll use it when I need to for effect.

So it’s mixed then… Some like the side mouth som elike the pacman mouth. Luckily I intend to use BOTH! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Both work, it’s really a matter of your preference and what style you want the character to have. As an animator it would be easier to do the mouth inside of his silhuoette, obviously, and it would look like POPEYES mouth or any HB character, as they all have their mouths in their sil’s as well, it’s just easier. Doing the Pacman mouth is a bit more difficult to negotiate but that’s what I’m goig with on my leads, the rest have interior mouths. It’s what you feel is more in keeping with your character.

Well yeah I think in the end it will be a decided on a case-to-case basis and I will probably draw the key frames on the sheets for each head turn just to keep control of it all. The other thing is that in the end the animators overseas are great draftsmen and I’m sure they will do a great job. If not there is always retakes.
