Late to the WALL-E party.

August 14th, 2008

As usual, I’m very late to the party, but I wanted to say a few words about Floyd Bishop’s fabulous Pixar debate.

(Immediate background: I just returned from seeing WALL-E with my family. My 13 year old was somewhat bored but appreciated the theme; my 11 year old saw it for the second time, surprised how much he loved it the first time out; my wife loved it both times she saw it; I was way impressed but not deeply engaged.)

I love everything Pixar does, for every reason imaginable, not the least being it’s the only studio (Frederator excluded, of course) that relies on animator trained folks as their primary writers (Lasseter, Stanton, Doctor, Bird, et al). And it really shows in the unique quality of the movies. And, of course, [Read more…]

Hotel Lucia, Portland, Oregon

So I was visiting Laika in Portland the other day. I stay at the Hotel Lucia where they paper the halls and rooms with hundreds of photos by the Pulitzer winning photographer David Hume Kennerly. This one outside my room works like many great political photos seeming to perfectly capture the personalities of Bill and Hillary Clinton during Monicagate.

I went visting my friend Alan Keith at Laika (the former WIll Vinton Studio) in Portland yesterday, and he really rolled out the red carpet. Including an hour where some of the staff gathered to talk with me about what we’re up to at the Frederators. It was great to meet everyone at this completely unique studio and catch up with some acquaintances like director/blogger/Drawn-er Ward Jenkins. It was particularly fun to meet Eric Weise, a director I “met” when he joined Channel Frederator RAW earlier this week.

Alan Keith is one of my favorite people ever and Laika’s lucky to have him. He’s Laika’s new VP of Business Operations and Chief Financial Officer. He was my colleague at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons before he was the top business guy at Lucafilm.

Thanks Alan. Thanks everyone.

[adult swim] offices: Atlanta, Georgia, 2007

I went to Atlanta to have dinner with my friend Mike Lazzo, founder, runner, emperor, and guru of [adult swim]. I’d never been to their offices/studios before but figured it must be a special place. I snapped a few pix, but because I was talking so much with Mike they’re not so great. Hopefully, they’ll give you a slight idea why it’s the kind of place anyone would love to go to every day .
