Character Variation and Continuity

One thing about creating a story is understanding the world within it. What kind of people would you find? Where is the setting based? How do characters react to each other? But for the most part, the most important aspect is will they fit together in the same world?
Like our own world, everyone has distinguishing characteristics, it’s what makes them different from each other, the fine line on how we can tell them all apart. How I feel, is that every character has a noticable “quirk” to their appearance, a definitive mark on their own personality. This goes along the lines of size, weight, facial features, markings, clothing, shapes and etc. whatever you can imagine is what will make a character completely different from all the rest of the surrounding characters.
Even so, character variation also plays a dangerous part in the “style” of a piece. Depending on the world setting, also creates an important role on what the characters are going to look like, side by side.
Now here’s the tricky part, what makes it that if two characters from different styles are put together, what makes them so dramatically unique from each other? It could be as simple as marking them within the lines of, say; traditional vs. anime styles. This, of course, is why you wouldn’t want to try to mix two worlds together in the same story (but would make for a great joke, as long as it’s not permanent.)
In short, every character is different, every character is unique in their own right, and their own appearance would definitely mark their visual perception of a personality. It’s all about making these characters work together in harmony.
TWINS though… that’s a different matter I suppose… Maybe I’m thinking too hard about it all.
