Character model sheets for Buck and Gailard

So here’s where we’re headed with Gailard. These were drawn by our guy J Chad Erekson. We tried to keep the proportions of the characters from the sketches we were given, but also add in some more details in the face. All we had to go on was the Post-It note looking sketch which was posted here not too long ago. While we’re putting our own spin on the characters, we don’t want to lose the design elements that made the sketches look so appealing.

Here are some facial studies. As you can see, we added some teeth and pupils. We looked at some paintings by Alex Kirwan to see how he would handle things dimensionally. This helped us figure out how cretain angles and such might look from other views.

For Buck the Cat, it was a little tricky because in the art we had for him, it looked like he was mid take, all posed into a shape that we can’t really use to model from. J Chad unfolded the cat and did some rough construction to see where his underlying skeletal structure would be. Not only did this help straighten out the character, but we plan to use it for a guide when we are rigging the character to get a rough idea of joint placement.

This is Buck from the side. We have to make him as straight as possible so that he can be rigged properly. This will allow for great controls when rigging, allowing the animators to really push their poses and get some strong silloettes during animation.

So… what do you think?

Very cool. When you need those voice over actors, call me, eh?

What do i think? I LOVE THEM!! I wish i could be apart of the team! -Steve

Cool stuff! I love 3D! I am always in awe of the people that can turn a great 2d cartoon into a believable 3D one and still keep the integrity of the character. Seems like it’s gonna be hard to get Gailard’s mouth to look like that in 3D but I’m sure you’ll work it out.

I really like the simplistic hands on him as well. Again, I can’t wait to see some of this stuff rigged and moving. I think this is gonna prove to be a great short. Post more stuff!

It has come to my attention that Gailard is NOT a scallion, but a ghost. We’ll be redesigning him a bit, so look for that soon.

Cant wait! Wish i was apart of the character design team! -Steve

Ok, still not getting it - What and who are the Six Monsters?????

Sorry MK. We’ll try and write a good what and who?

Definitley a good idea Fred. I just started tuning in to the frederator blog, that would be cool to have a bit of an overview of what 6 monsters is.
