Explanation: Hi Frederators,
Here are some submissions for the Random Cartoons logo contest. It
looks like a lot, but it’s essentially one design — the laughing R –
with some variations in badge and text treatments.
Thanks for the opportunity to take a crack at this. It was fun!
Best, Dustin

Really clever idea for the treatment of the “R.” Although the one that appears in most of the designs is the most elegant/ self-contained, the one in the design on the top row right reads better as the smile. I can imagine the difficulty in balancing the R shape and smile shape to find the happy medium. What is the serif font that appears in most of the treatments?

Thanks. That’s a good description of the difference. I had some reservations about submitting all these variations rather than just choosing the best one, but it seemed like the way to go with the contest format — never know what might catch someone’s eye.
There are some bigger versions here:

The serif font is Volta EF Bold. What does the font evoke?

I’m becoming a born again font nerd and the font caught my eye because it has the commanding smack of a Cooper Black with more of the thick and thin variation of a Bodoni or Garamond. The “a” is super cute because of the chubby bulb at the end of the stem. For me, it evokes the 60s, “classic” cartoons and ads, and classrooms. It was cool that you included variations and ideally there would be more discussion on the blog because of it - more talk of process and an exchange of ideas. The one that works best for me is the fourth one down on the right row. It seems to adhere to the current Frederator aesthetic (which may or may not apply here) and the elements have the best balance for a single icon. I also appreciate the green as a contrast to the Oh Yeah! red.
