Working a Few Bugs Out of the System

Oops! ReFrederator’s “Insect Infestation Week” has me a bit buggy — I posted some comments earlier on the wrong cartoon! What I meant to say was… ummm… today’s film is “Joe Glow.” Early Chuck Jones goodie. Very Disney like. Made before Jones got down to the job of being flat out hilarious every six and a half minutes. The big deal here is scale — an ongoing theme in Jones’ stuff — little, tiny character juxtaposed with ordinary household items blown up to enormous proportions. Very small children often think the punchline to this cartoon is screamingly funny.

This has enough charm to completely make me forget about the domestic violence from Dancing on the Moon.

I also thought the punchline was screamingly funny.

Well, I said small children usually love the final gag, which is completely true — but I must confess, I always got a kick out of it too. Nobody could yell like Mel Blanc.

It has to be a rare cartoon with only one active character. I also find it mind-boggling that the same Chuck Jones who used art school drawings of a sleeping man as backgrounds here later did Wackiki Wabbit with its proto-psychedelic backgrounds.
