A Pig and a Duck

Terrific twosomes! Peerless Pairs! Colossal Couples! ReFrederator launches “Singular Duos Week” by teaming two A list cartoon stars, Porky Pig and Daffy Duck in “Yankee Doodle Daffy.”
These guys co-starred in oodles of films, but their exact relationship mutated toon to toon — sidekicks one time, straight man and comedian the next, occasionally even life and death adversaries. Today Porky plays some kind of casting director, relentlessly hounded by Daffy, the demented personal representative of a rather unpromising looking entertainer. For once, the duck seems ideally suited for his occupation du jour — the brute ferocity of his sales pitch leaves us boggled trying to imagine an act, ANY act, that could possibly live up to his build-up. What? Al Jolson swallowing the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? I dunno!
No Warner Brothers director had a surer hand for musical material than Friz Freleng, and this cartoon is just sloppin’ over with melodic snippets! And ya gotta love the way crazed, psychotic, driven Daffy can take a few seconds from his ballyhoo to try on Porky’s new chapeau (he doesn’t like it much!)
More memorable match-ups on the way during “Singular Duos Week” at ReFrederator!

Better watch that about the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They’re vengeful. I know a scaley little green kid who got an anvil dropped on him.

It was cartoons like these that caused me to know, at an early age, terms like “flapper girl” but not know what they meant. So my homework after watching this is to figure out the expressions represented by the corn and the meat (I got the “screw ball”).

The meat is ‘ham’ and the corn is the noun form of ‘corny.’ The screwball image makes a more famous appearance in “Duck Amuck.”

“Ham.” Thank you.
My fuzzy memory tells me that Duck Amuck had the screw ball flag flying from a tail when Daffy had the flower head…Hey, now I’ll never be able to watch Peter Gabriel without imagining him with the screw ball flag.
