It’s not the Idea, it’s the Execution

When it comes to cartoon concepts, there are a few ideas we get pitched over and over again: superheroes with wacky powers, buddy comedies starring Frank ‘n’ Stein, and, of course, anything with monkeys. Now our motto is “It’s not the idea, it’s the execution.” I always say that if our favorite 39 cartoon pitches were about pink hippo detectives, then we’d be The Pink Hippo Detective Cartoon Show.
That said (or typed), I still do a double-take when I see similar concepts come into our posh Burbank offices. Take the past week, for instance. In the past eight days, I was asked to consider - count ‘em - three cartoons where the lead character(s) had fishbowls for heads. Now, each was very, very different from the others (at least as different as cartoons with fishbowl-headed characters can be). But, I mean, is there something in the water or what? This certainly tops when, a few weeks ago and in one day, I listened to two buddy comedy ideas where the buddies were a rat and a cockroach.
One more thing. I hope he won’t mind me mentioning, but one of the fishbowl-head ideas came from one of my new favorite people - recent CalArts graduate Jeaux Janovsky. I guarantee you that you could take the most prosaic idea, put it in Jeaux’s hands, and receive one of the most distinctive pieces of animation there is. I hope you’re already familiar with Jeaux’s work, but if you’re not, I’m glad you first heard about him here.

Jeaux is so totally rad!!! It’s rare to see an animator be able to mix the ingredients of creativity, drawing skillage, and concept together to make a chemical explosion so innovative it blows you away. I think that Jeaux has a special secret ingredient too, but I’m not so sure what….
On September 21st, 2005 at 12:00 am
Jeaux is way crazy, super funny.. and a creative genius! You never know what he will think of next. awesome job, i hope jeaux gets on the frederator team…
That’s cool for Jeaux! he’d be a benefit for frederator and nick.
Keep bugging him to come in and pitching Eric!!!

Jeaux’s art is what a 50 year old toddler dreams of at night. Its a Creative cocktail containing a bit of Innocence, a dash of Insomnia, Two fingers of whole milk, and shaken at an atomic rate. A perfect companion for that saturday morning bowl of fruity pebbles.

Jeaux’s art murdered me with happiness.
With each character design, I look forward to dying a lot more.
We need people like Jeaux to run Saturday mornings.
On September 21st, 2005 at 12:00 am
Jeaux is the best! He will be fro Frederator and Nick what croissants are for France! I look forward to seeing his cartoon!
On September 21st, 2005 at 12:00 am
Not only can Mr. Jeaux take any idea and make it laughibly credible, (in a good way), but he can take unused toilet paper and fecal matter, animate it 24 frames per second and have it come out funnier than a room full of pubescent adolescent ladies with pit hair at a Bat Mitzvah!
On September 21st, 2005 at 12:00 am
Everybody needs a little Jeaux in the morning. His work always perks up my day.
On September 21st, 2005 at 12:00 am
Ok, I have an unbiased opinion since Jeaux has at many a times got on my nerve when we shared a studio and has also been a good friend, but the one thing that never changed was how I feel about the way this guy can take something totally mundane and boring and make it freakishly amusing. He’s an amazing artist who words cannot describe. Just… just look at his work. Sit in a room with him and a few people for a few minutes and he’ll start drawing conversations and it’s just absolutely bizarre in the greatest way. It’s a crime to not have his work available to the masses of little demented children. If nothing else he should have a show or something so the drawing he did of me is worth something and I can sell it or something if I’m strapped for cash when he becomes famous…

I would wake up on a Saturday morning to watch Jeaux’s cartoons, and that says a lot considering the preciousness of sleeping in on a weekend. His characters make me feel sad and happy simultaneously in the best possible way. No matter what they’re doing,I just want to give them a hug. One of the hardest things to do is to come up with a character that makes people feel, and Jeaux’s got that one nailed.
On September 21st, 2005 at 12:00 am
What more is there to say about the Jeaux, the guy draws like other people breath, constantly and effortlessly.
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
I heard jeaux’s fishbowl-bot also makes breakfast in bed, which really puts him ahead of the game. bam.
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
I have been fortunate enough to have basked in Mr. Jeaux’s amazing abilities for a little while, and the day he ceases to amuse me with his extraordinarily bizzare and witty cartoons is the day I live in a fishbowl myself (which I hope is not very soon, or ever… unless it was a human-sized fishbowl, but that would have to be renamed to humanbowl).

Jeax is to animation what Bjork is to music, strange, but insanely cute (his animation, he’s only of average cuteness in appearance). A welcome breathe of originality in a world full of too much of the same.
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
Nickelodeon without Jeaux is like a baby born with no eyes and a webbed foot growing out of his arm socket. What I’m trying to say here is that he’s THE MAN.
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
jeaux makes rolling off insanely brilliant stories look effortless, yet in every one of his works that I’ve seen, animated or otherwise, something different hits you each time. You immediately appreciate what you see, but there’s also something new to notice every time you watch one of his creations. It’s a unique experience for everyone. I seriously am and always have been awed by his attention to detail that is woven into the childlike wanderings of his mind. All of these things are evident in his drawings and animation.
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
jeaux is unstoppable. literally unstoppable. take away all his pens and markers and he’ll start drawing on paper napkins with his own blood.

I am very, very jealous of the people on the West Coast. I have ideas for projects all the time that I turn around and realize require a Jeaux to make them happen. But I don’t have one. He’s 3000 miles away. It is sad.
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
OK, I drank the Kool-Aid and read through this Jeaux dude’s blog, and y’know what?, it’s pretty bad-ass. I keep pegging his style and then I keep being wrong. They’re all stills, of course — I’d like to see his stuff animated.
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
Jeaux is not only talented and bright, he is also so amazingly charming,
he could fill even the meanest school yard bullies heart with glee.
Jeaux makes magic happen, with the twitch of a brow or a wink of an eye
he lightens hearts and places wings on heavy feet. The world is in
desperate need of Jeaux and his number 2 pencil. For he not only
inspires he brings crab apples to there knees. Jeaux is a perfect remedy
for any ailment. It’s to bad we can’t clone him I’d like to build a
fleet of Jeaux’s…
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
Yeah, mang. This is the styles for real. For real.
On September 22nd, 2005 at 12:00 am
Damn man. You are so committing a crime by not having this young PRODIGY named Jeaux Janovsky in your company already. The man is awesome and has some great funky awesome ideas. I think you should hire him before he goes over to CN, if you know what I mean. This guy is a value to your company and if you hire him and make one of his ideas into a show. I promise I will start watching your network again…..THAT’S A FACT!!!

SO you may be wondering, “Why are all these people madly in love with this fellow Jeaux?”…or maybe “who is this Jeaux person I keep hearing high acclaim for?”
I will answer the first question simply with, we are in love with Jeaux because he is beautiful. His heart, his mind, his soul, his twists, his unravels, his happies, his sadies…all beautiful. This beauty makes him a talented man-boy, a super friend, and a perfect hero.
There has been many a day when I have found myself saying “Jeaux is my hero”. If you know him or have seen his creations; I am sure you have found yourself saying the same thing. It is inspiring to be touched by his glow.
I will answer the second question with a list and some thoughts. Jeaux is a genius, a prodigy, a radical, a maverick, an orginal, a pioneer, an eccentric, a revolutionary. But, most of all he is the most talented artist I have known. His animation/art will one day be looked back apon as being “one of the greats”. Little bits of paper he scribbled on will be sold for ridiculous amounts of money on the eBays of the future. Fans will camp outside of the theaters (Star Wars style)…just to get a seat at a PREMIERE showing of a Jeaux animation. The Ice Capades will have productions with Octopuses and Hornicorns. People will start spelling words like “TOE” and “POTATO”; like “TEAUX” and “POTATEAUX”….AND as sad as it is, one day a tea party with Jeaux will be rudely interupted by photo sessions and autographs.
I love Jeaux. They love Jeaux. You will Love Jeaux.
I wish I could afford to hire Jeaux.
::sigh::

Not only is he a great artist… he is a damn good human being…
On September 24th, 2005 at 12:00 am
Yeah, Jeaux’s stuff is the awesome. And I’m real honored to be able to collaborate with him on things here and there…
I do need to see more of his stuff in motion, tho. The two toons I’ve gotten a cance to see made me giggle like an idiot.

Jeaux Janovsky is one of those rare and radiant individuals currently putting the ingenuity back in animation. Viva la Jeaux!
On September 27th, 2005 at 12:00 am
Jeaux is the coolest. I was always amazed whenever I got a chance to see his work at CalArts. It’s insightful, whimsical, quarky, true to life. You can truly see a part of Jeaux in his work. To sum it up..it’s fucking RAD!
I can’t wait to tune in to Jeaux’s fishbowel cartoon. It’ll blow Spunge Bob right out of the water. Hurray for Jeaux! Hurray!!!!!! And Jeaux, if you see this…we still have yet to make a trade. You can have any photo you want, as long as I can own a drawing of yours to treasure always. I promise I won’t sell it on ebay. I know it will be worth a lot some day…or in the next hour..hmmmmm~
But honestly, seeing his work always puts a stupid smile on my face. Soon it shall be a permanent smile when Lil’ Jeaux conquers the world!
On September 27th, 2005 at 12:00 am
If anyone deserves a little recognition, it would have to be Jeaux. Creative genius oozes from him as effortlessly as most people breathe. I have no doubt that he will have amazing success with the young offbeat crowd (who spend on their parents credit cards daily at Hot Topic) with his awe inspiring animations and ideas eventually, but it is to your great credit that he is under consideration for your company. He is a neverending well of creation. Give him a chance and he will blow you away. And make you giggle.
On September 27th, 2005 at 12:00 am
Man, fishbowl-head idea? That’s only a sneak peek at Jeaux’s amazing work. I was lucky enough to see this guy’s work at CalArts, and must say that it’s bizarrely riveting. Jeaux rules!
On September 27th, 2005 at 12:00 am
jeaux is the bestest in the whole world. he is one of the few people in the world that has a pedestal in my mind. he deserves to get everything he wants. he drew a picture in my sketch book once and i now have it framed. i would never part with it, ever. that’s how great his work is…
On September 27th, 2005 at 12:00 am
Jeaux is not only an amazingly talented artist but also a delightfully kind human being. I can’t wait to see what comes next! The world needs more Jeauxs!
On September 29th, 2005 at 12:00 am
Jeaux’s why I went to CalArts. Jeaux’s why I draw. Jeaux’s awesome. Recognize.

Jeaux’s easy going, is-that-guy-a-cucumber? demeanor belies his monstrously creative mind.
On October 3rd, 2005 at 12:00 am
if some one doesn’t give this fuck-head a cartoon soon i am going to slash my throat with the dullest object i can find in my bathroom and impale myself with as many magic markers and bic ball-point pens as i can before i expire of blood loss or the assumed heart-attack i would have from the surmounting bodily trauma……i love you, jeaux!
