Yaki and Yumi

Taking Direction

August 10th, 2005

One of the greatest experiences I have had so far, was meeting with my awesome director Jun Falkenstein, and BG/Color stylist/artist extraordinare, Paul Stec. They gave me a lot of notes about how to plus my board and make it stronger, clearer, and funnier. I decided to show you an example of this. On the first version that I did, it is hard to see the action clearly. The shot I chose is the problem. Paul and Jun suggested that I change my staging so that the audience can read the action more clearly. In the new version, it is easier to see what is happening, and the gag will read better once it is animated. I am learning it is best not to get too fancy, and just keep things simple.

Hi Aliki Hey!!!
I really love your storyboards and the energy and passion they bring!
I always believe it keeping things simple and easy to read. The early Warner Bros. cartoons are good examples of this. This is one of the many things Chuck Jones taught me as my mentor.
Yaki and Yumi looks like a super fabulous show and look forward in seeing much more!!!
Continued success and fun!
Your Cartoon Pal…..
Finster Hey!

Very nice site!

Yumi and Yaki are so cute. I love that they are stretchy and have their own grumpy-faces! Can’t wait for more images!

Very interesting blog!

Aliki, this is very cool. It is so cool to see the creative process is alive and well. I look forward to seeing more. And congratulations on everything that is going on.

Very nice site!

I see the differences from the two versions but is there a way to incorporate the two? Like starting out with the closeup and zooming out? For those of us who like facial expressions and the richness of detail this really feeds us. Their expressions are so funny and so consistent to the nature of their personalities no matter what action they are involved in - I love that!

Very nice site!

It is a good point, but in this scene, the clarity of the action is most important, and we need people to not get lost in the facial expression, but more to understand what is happening. After the action is completed, as you can see I have cut to a close up so we can see Yaki’s facial expression when he says “We’ll walk.”

Hmmmmm, yes I see what you mean - I do love Yaki’s expression there but I also get a kick out of their expressions in the very first box of the first version :-)

Aliki, you are sooo creative. I can’t wait to see how this progresses. Yaki and Yumi are so adorable. I look forward to seeing you again in LA.

I can’t wait to see more from your awesome show and for you guys to come out here again!
